Extension of the blue line | Five artists chosen for new stations

Marc Séguin, Nadia Myre, Ludovic Boney, Jocelyne Alloucherie and Alain Paiement have been chosen to create a work of art in one or other of the five future stations of the blue line of the Montreal metro, announces the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) and the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications.

Wendat artist Ludovic Boney will create a work for Pie-IX station, photographer Jocelyne Alloucherie for Viau station, teacher and artist Alain Paiement has been assigned Lacordaire station, painter, filmmaker and novelist Marc Séguin will work for Langelier station and Algonquin artist Nadia Myre for Anjou station.

The STM specifies that the five artists “will work together with the architect-designers of the stations, in order to integrate the new work into the creative vision of the architect and into the architecture of the premises”.

A committee formed by the Ministry had selected 20 artists, invited to present an application file in which they had to propose their artistic vision for the stations. As the Pie-IX station is the first stage of the project, Ludovic Boney has already been at work for a while. He met several times with the architect-designer of the station, Maria José Benech, from the consortium of architects Lemay Bisson Fortin Architectes, in order to design his work. “We’ve made good progress,” he said. I have already submitted sketches. »

Ludovic Boney considers himself lucky to have been chosen for this project. “The Montreal metro is one of the most beautiful,” he says. It was designed with the aim of being pleasant to use. If we compare it, for example, to the Toronto metro, where it’s just a series of tunnels and stairs, the Montreal metro is different, because the STM has made sure that works of art are integrated into even station walls. It’s good that they try to do it again. »

Marc Séguin is also very happy to have been chosen for the Langelier station. “It’s a great privilege to be able to intervene in the public space,” he says. I have rarely wanted so much to have a project like this! This extension of the blue line will completely change the sector. I went for a walk and the arrival of these stations will improve the area a lot. »

Marc Séguin has already met the architects with whom he collaborates, namely Laurence Le Beux and Maxime Frappier, president of ACDF Architecture. “I will have to present models in a few months, but it will not be final,” he says. I think I will make a very fine art work, which will be unique. It’s really a nice project. »

Jocelyne Alloucherie has also made good progress with the conception of her work. She will work in collaboration with the architect-designer Éric Gauthier (Les Architectes FABG). “I’m expecting the STM to visit my workshop soon,” she says. As I have to work on the walls, it will be a proposal with various image configurations. »

Jocelyne Alloucherie

Jocelyne Alloucherie remains vague in the description of her future work. The chosen artists are required, for the moment, not to reveal details about their creation. In any case, the photographer says she spends a lot of energy in her studio on rue Dandurand on work that she describes as a kind of “sky dream”.

Nadia Myre explains that she will integrate the idea she concocts into the architecture of Anjou station, working with Jean-François Gagnon, from the Lemay Bisson Fortin Architectes consortium. “We only had two project introductory meetings in December. The basic concepts are still very vague,” she says. Finally, Alain Paiement will collaborate with the architect-designer of the Lacordaire station, Stéphane Langevin, of STGM + Daoust Lestage Architectes in consortium. He loves this station. “For its elegance and, above all, for the particularity of the situation: a glass wall visible from both sides and traversed by daylight from morning to late afternoon. And then, there is an exceptional luminosity. It will be majestic. »
