A huge explosion shook, Friday, September 2, one of the largest mosques in Herat, in western Afghanistan, causing 18 dead and 23 injured, according to the spokesman for the governor of the province of Herat. Among the victims is theinfluential imam Mujib ur Rahman Ansariwho had called a few weeks ago for the beheading of anyone who sought to oppose the Taliban regime.
Footage circulating on social media shows what appears to be bloodied bodies strewn around the grounds of the Gazaghah mosque and local media said it feared many casualties.
Mujib ur Rahman Ansari, a renowned cleric and leading supporter of the Taliban, was killed in “a brutal attack on Friday in Herat”confirmed on Twitter government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. “The Islamic Emirate expresses its deep sorrow for his death and those responsible for this incident will be punished for their heinous acts”, he promised. Mujib ur Rahman Ansari drained many devotees and was known for his fiery speeches. Speaking at a meeting of clerics in Kabul in early July, he said anyone trying to overthrow the Taliban regime should be beheaded.
