The 24 teams selected to participate in the competition are divided into six groups of four teams each. The France group is made up of the following three other countries: Austria, the Netherlands and Poland. The group stage will be played from June 14 to 26. France’s first match will pit it against Austria on Monday June 17 – broadcast on TF1 – then against the Netherlands on Friday June 21 (M6) and finally against Poland on Tuesday June 25 (TF1).
If the French finish in the first two of their group, they will be directly qualified for the round of 16. If they are third, they can also be qualified, but on condition of being one of the four best thirds of the six groups, having accumulated the most points. If there is a tie on points, UEFA will look, to decide between them, firstly at the score of their direct confrontation, then at the goal difference and finally at the number of goals scored.
From the round of 16, from June 29 to July 2, we move on to single matches. There, if there is a tie at the end of the match, the two teams will go to overtime, then if necessary to penalties. The semi-finals will take place on July 9 and 10, and the final on July 14.
During matches, each team previously had the right to three substitutes during a match. Since Covid, teams have been allowed five substitutes. They can even call on a sixth joker, in the event of overtime during knockout matches.
And in terms of sanctions, beyond suspensions, there is something new. Referees have been instructed to be firm regarding the crowds of players around them when making a decision. There are no specific penalties for this, but they are encouraged to speak with the captains, rather than the whole team.
In terms of remuneration for the 24 selections, UEFA provides an envelope of 331 million euros, as for Euro 2021. This envelope is distributed according to the team’s results. A selection beaten at each meeting will, for example, receive, in total, a little more than nine million euros which will go to its federation. The champion team will be able to receive up to 28 million euros if it wins the competition and its three matches in the first round.
