Expert advice | The automobile in question: twins

Q. I have a Subaru Crosstrek, my second, which I really like. But I will need a seven-seater soon because my daughter is expecting twins and we will be very involved grandparents. What do you recommend ?

R. Since you seem very happy with Subaru products, maybe you should consider the Ascent then. It is a versatile vehicle, equipped with an all-wheel drive as powerful as that of your current vehicle. In the same category, we also invite you to consider the Toyota Highlander – especially in its hybrid configuration – or, better yet, the Sienna from the same manufacturer.

COMING SOON WINTER

Q. I am looking for an inexpensive, four-wheel drive compact automobile. Thank you for not offering me an SUV. What do you suggest to me?

R. LThere are not many options in the automotive industry. You could consider the Mazda3 (dynamic to drive, nice presentation) and the Subaru Impreza (powerful all-wheel drive and solid construction).

NEED FOR CHANGE

Q. I have to change my Toyota Matrix which I liked in every way. I was wondering what would be the better choice in the used market for a vehicle with a manual transmission between the Toyota iM, the Toyota Corolla hatchback and the Honda Civic hatchback. I am of course looking for reliability, comfort, driving pleasure and practicality. I keep my vehicles for long periods. I kept my first Matrix until its 275,000 km with the only mechanical failure a radiator, at 175,000 km.

R. All of your choices are great, although none of these models offer the same versatility as your current Matrix. The iM (born under the Scion brand) is undoubtedly the group’s most financially advantageous model. The Civic hatchback is still the most fun to drive, but the prices charged on the second-hand market (this also applies to the Corolla) are sometimes beyond comprehension.

ENERGETIC TRANSITION

Q. I currently drive a 2012 Volvo XC70 with 241,000 km on the clock. It is quite reliable and comfortable. I travel an average of 15,000 km per year. Considering this scenario, should I opt for a greener vehicle? Electric or hybrid? I read articles that claim the hybrid is more environmentally friendly. Note that cargo volume and comfort are at the top of my purchasing priorities.

R. If we do not take into account the manufacturing process (which is the subject of many debates), it is obvious that, in the street, the electric vehicle is currently the greenest solution. That said, the plug-in hybrid is a technology that, for many, represents a transitional stage rich in learning before turning definitively to all-electric. To find today the same characteristics as those of your current XC70 (all-wheel drive, loading volume, comfort), you will have more choices on the side of plug-in hybrid vehicles than those with electric propulsion. So you could think of another Volvo, the XC60 T-8 for example, or, as long as your current vehicle is in good condition and properly maintained, consider keeping it until the end of its useful life. This also represents a gesture for the environment.
