We change everything
My old Mazda CX-7, 2011, comfortable and spacious, is unfortunately reaching the end of its useful life with more than 200,000 km and very few repairs. I want to change it in the fall. I am looking for a comfortable vehicle, capable of driving around town as well as on the bumpy roads of Quebec wildlife reserves. My budget is $40,000. Apart from the Subaru Forester, what vehicle would suit me? I tried the CX-5, but I was really not impressed, and I would like to change from the Mazda brand…
Bruno A.
Considering its higher-than-average ground clearance and overall comfort, the Forester appears to be your best choice. The Jeep Cherokee would have been a choice to consider if this vehicle had proven to be more reliable. But you could also review your needs by taking a look at the Crosstrek (Subaru), which is more compact and less fuel-hungry. Although you want to change brands, know that the CX-50 (at the limit of your budget) is probably better suited to your criteria.
Heavy rollers
We have a 2010 Kia Sportage with over 250,000 km on the odometer. We live in Haute-Gaspésie and the roads are mountainous. We want a used vehicle (2019-2020-2021). We are thinking of a Subaru Crosstrek or a Mitsubishi product. What do you think?
Louise V.
The Crosstrek is arguably the best vehicle in its class, but considering your usage, a Mitsubishi product seems even more appropriate. Why? It offers a much more generous warranty and excellent reliability despite its lower level of sophistication. An RVR is worth considering here.
Homework to do
I have a 2021 Porsche Macan S that is due to lease at the end of September with 42,000 km on the odometer. I am planning to buy it, but I am wondering if I should buy the extended warranty given the cost of repairs. What do you suggest?
Nathalie R.
It’s not so much the cost of repairs as the cost of parts… We suggest that before you make your decision (to take or not to take an extended warranty) you have the vehicle inspected before the end of the warranty. Secondly, you should get the price of the latter, while keeping in mind that the amount requested is negotiable. Thirdly, we suggest you listen for recommendations from independent specialist workshops. These can ensure lower prices than servicing your vehicle outside the dealer network. Finally, you should know that the reliability of the Macan is higher than the average for vehicles in its category. In the end, you may realize that the extended warranty is a luxury you can do without.
Time to retire
I have a Toyota Yaris that is 19 years old and has 185,000 km. I will try to keep it as long as possible, but rust is starting to set in. Since there are no more small cars, I am having a hard time choosing the next one. I live in an apartment so I am not considering an electric car. My criteria: comfort for my back, so the seat must not be low, as well as acceptable gas consumption. What are your suggestions for the best value for money and the smallest possible SUV?
Sylvie B.
Indeed, the small car segment is dying out. You might consider the Nissan Kicks or the Hyundai Venue. Two vehicles that most closely match your criteria.
