Exo gets its hands on 10 new modern and ecological locomotives

Greater Montreal public transit operator Exo has acquired 10 new locomotives that will be able to accommodate a greater number of passengers on board its trains in the coming years.

From 2025, the Charger type locomotives acquired for a sum of $132 million will gradually replace the F59PH locomotives. They will thus be able to draw 10 cars, two more than currently, and improve the experience of Exo users with its modernized fleet.

“The commuter train is undeniably part of the sustainable mobility equation and that is why we continue to invest in the network to build a reliable and efficient public transport network”, mentioned Friday the general manager of Exo, Sylvain Yelle adding that this new acquisition will provide reliable and pleasant customer service.

This modernization project was funded by the Government Assistance Program for Public Transit (PAGTCP).

“Improving public transit in the greater Montreal area has always been one of our priorities. This is why I am proud that our government is supporting the acquisition of new locomotives that will modernize the network of trains that connect the suburbs of Montreal to the city center,” declared the Minister for Transport and Minister responsible for Montreal area, Chantal Rouleau.

Reduce environmental impact

The transport network will be able to reduce its environmental impact, while the new locomotives will be less polluting than those currently in service.

Produced by Siemens Mobility, the first locomotive should be delivered in 2025.

“We are thrilled to partner with exo and look forward to working with them to modernize their fleet with the latest in sustainable and smart rail technologies,” said Yvan Desjardins-Siciliano, CEO of Siemens Mobility in Canada.
