Exhibition | Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Statements by Thierry-Maxime Loriot

After Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Planet, Peter Lindbergh A Different Vision on Fashion PhotographyAnd Thierry Mugler: CouturissimeQuebecer Thierry-Maxime Loriot is the curator of the exhibition Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Statementspresented until October 6 at the Kunsthalle museum in Munich.

This exhibition pays tribute to the Dutch designer duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (Viktor & Rolf); more than a hundred of their creations are on display in addition to sketches, photographs, videos, as well as porcelain dolls dressed in their emblematic creations. Madonna, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Doja Cat and Tilda Swinton, among others, have worn their clothes.

For 30 years, the duo Viktor & Rolf has explored the boundaries between haute couture and art and always creates very daring collections. “They are the only ones in their category, they are true artists who use fashion as a means of expression. Their creations are closer to sculpture than clothing,” explains Thierry-Maxime Loriot in a telephone interview.

“It’s pure creation, and I think it’s very inspiring to show younger generations that there are people who are disrupting the codes of haute couture by making surprising and innovative clothes,” he says. It’s quite exceptional to be able to show in a museum these haute couture creations which constituted a revolution in the world of fashion, because everything is surprising in their universe, their voluminous tulle silhouettes, just like their catwalk shows. »

Thierry-Maxime Loriot always takes care of the scenography of his exhibitions. He once again worked with the Quebec visual effects company Rodeo FX (Dune, Stranger Things). These effects ensure, in particular, that the clothes come to life thanks to spectacular animations. The exhibition curator also created the beautiful 312-page art book which accompanies the exhibition, Viktor & Rolf, Fashion Statements and asks the question: are we designers or artists? Why not be both?
