Exhibition “Shawls and aprons, finery of yesteryear” at the Maison du Kochersberg

You know the importance of Tràchte, traditional clothes in the region. But the costumes are much more diverse and varied than what the clichés peddled by certain authors have wanted to bequeath to us.

The Maison du Kochersberg in Truchtersheim promotes the local heritage, its rites and traditions, its old or more contemporary objects in constantly renewed exhibitions. You will discover a Késselschranck (wardrobe with 7 columns) dating from the 17th century housing a collection of kelsch, the famous Alsatian linen fabric, with checks, obtained by crossing blue or red threads or the two colors together, on a background ecru. Its name refers to the blue taken from pastel grown near Cologne (Köln). This fabric was used in the 19th century to make the tops of Alsatian pillow covers and eiderdowns. In addition, until November 20, you who are a fan of fabrics and Tràchte, you can admire the exhibition “shawls and aprons, ornaments of yesteryear”.

Because the apron was ubiquitous, especially among ladies, who wore some for cooking, but others for going to mass or shopping. These were more elaborate, with embroidery, lace and decorations. you will see the aprons of certain trades, blacksmiths, shoemakers, etc. And if you are already there, take the time to see the other temporary exhibition on “the heritage of the period 1870-1918”, which is not generally taught at school, since it is German history. But the number of investments, innovations, sometimes still present in our local law, deserves attention.

You will also discover elements of authentic Kochersberg furniture in the “ecomuseum” part with the reconstruction of a living room: the “Stub” which smells of encaustic, you know, the preparation based on wax and gasoline to maintain and shine furniture or parquet floors. Admire a kitchen from the end of the 19th century and a cobbler’s workshop with the good smell of wax and leather of yesteryear, craftsman at home as it was practiced here. Visit the Kochersberg house at L’esKapade, 4 place du Marché in Drüüdershe, Truchtersheim. Open Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. (7 p.m. Friday).
