A former RCMP officer found guilty of hitting and threatening a 16-year-old girl he dreamed of marrying got away with a house arrest sentence that he will have to serve at his sister’s house in Laval .
It all started in the fall of 2021 when Osama Ibrahim, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer based in Saint John, New Brunswick, began courting the teenager. The man even went so far as to mention the idea of marrying her, an idea rejected by the young woman’s parents who nevertheless allowed the two individuals to cultivate their love, summarized CBC News on Friday.
However, in various incidents in late 2021 and early 2022, Ibrahim physically assaulted his girlfriend, including strangling her on several occasions.
The former police officer finally received a nine-month detention sentence on Friday to be served in the community. The man will have to stay with his sister in Laval at all times and will be able to leave the home only under certain conditions, such as to go to work.
Judge Kelly Winchester considers it an “appropriate” sentence in this case.
“As I pointed out, this is an issue that requires a dissuasive message. This message to be delivered with a sentence of detention in the community,” she explained according to the CBC report.
