Former NHL defenseman Bryan Marchment died suddenly at the age of 53 in Montreal, his agent announced Wednesday.
Agent Rick Curran confirmed Marchment’s death to The Associated Press. Marchment, a scout for the San Jose Sharks, was in the metropolis to participate in the NHL Draft which will take place starting Thursday at the Bell Center.
The cause of death remains unknown.
Marchment played 17 NHL seasons between 1989 and 2006 with the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames. The Toronto native had been a scout and had other roles with the Sharks and their American Hockey League academy since 2007.
His son, Mason Marchment, is a forward for the Florida Panthers.
