Evgeni Malkin receives new contacts

Forward Evgeni Malkin took part in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ training almost normally, taking in a few contacts on Saturday. Wearing a regular jersey for the first time this season, the Russian could make a comeback soon.

Having had knee surgery during the summer, Malkin first resumed skating on October 18. He was able to practice with his teammates on November 29, and the progress seen this week is very encouraging for the Penguins.

The 35-year-old veteran trained alongside Jeff Carter and Danton Heinen on the team’s second line. He also got a few spins on the second power play wave.

“He was not a full participant. Few contacts were planned for this training, but his participation is what comes closest to 100%. It is very exciting for the squad to participate in this way, ”said head coach Mike Sullivan after the exercise.

Fortunately, there are no more cases of COVID-19 in Pittsburgh, but the infirmary is still overflowing. Bryan Rust (lower body) and Jake Guentzel (upper body), who haven’t played since November 24 and December 6 respectively, skated together in the morning. Brian Boyle, whose state of health is reassessed daily, also put on the skates with the two forwards.
