Everyone at the castle on May 1: Landskron castle

A unique opportunity to discover or rediscover our heritage, by exchanging with all those who care passionately about it. This event, promoted by Alsace Destination Tourisme, is organized by volunteers and castle managers, with the help of the Living Forts Castles, Alsace Forts Castles and the Route des Châteaux et Cités fortifiés d’Alsace associations. Today, head to the extreme south of Alsace at the Château du Landskron, in the Sundgau commune of Leymen. Literally, the name means “that which crowns the earth”.

Built before 1297, the castle of Landskron had a very important strategic position, because it allowed the control of the Eastern Sundgau, the bend of the Rhine and the city of Basel. From this time of the rivalries about the property rights on the castle were brought back. Just like the castles of Ferrette and Morimont, the castle of Landskron passes under possession of Habsbourg and its history merges with former Austria. After the Thirty Years War, the territories of the Habsburgs passed to the King of France, and Vauban carried out major fortification works at the Landskron, which housed a military garrison there, then soon a state prison, with quite a few political prisoners. .

In December 1813, the castle was destroyed by the Austrians and the Bavarians with the exception of the keep, saved thanks to the action of the priest of Hagenthal-le-Bas who succeeded in convincing General de Wrede, responsible for dismantling the fortress of spare the dungeon as a token of his victory. This large rectangular keep is astonishing, it is ideal for enjoying the panoramic view of Basel, the Black Forest and the Sundgau from the top of the tower where an orientation table awaits you.

On the program this Sunday, immersive visits by drone all day long, in the afternoon, projection of a 360° film under a geodesic dome, and an exhibition of vintage cars. All the information on the website alsaceterredechateaux.com
