One of the challenges of sports competitions today is to pollute less, to go green. An event that brings together 5,000 people can produce up to 2.5 tonnes of waste. How to do better?

Garbage strewn on the ground is what you sometimes find after a sports competition. Events of 5,000 people, such as a marathon, can produce up to 2.5 tons. Some organizers are now trying to go green. This is the case of the Deauville triathlon (Calvados). Athletes are prohibited from throwing their waste outside the cleanliness areas. In these spaces, volunteers collect the garbage of the participants.

Ecological beacons

Likewise, the competition is done with disposable bottles. It has set up a system of reusable water bottles. Spectators are not excluded from the initiative. From now on, drinks are served in returnable cups. Zero waste challenges are multiplying in France. Another organizer uses, for example, ecological beacons.
