Canadian Evan Dunfee was inspired by the support of his loved ones and won gold at the Commonwealth Games.
The 31-year-old British Columbian won the 10,000-metre race on Sunday, managing to pull away from his nearest rival by about 40 meters in the final lap.
He clocked 38 minutes 36.37 seconds, breaking the Canadian record and the Commonwealth Games record.
“I believed in myself today as much as my friends and family do,” said Dunfee.
“That was my goal today, just to come here and have that confidence in myself. Everyone believes in me and that’s what I managed to do. I am very happy about it,” he added.
Dunfee’s victory comes after a difficult season in which he was plagued by a thigh injury and lack of motivation following elimination from the 50km event. It was on this distance that he won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last summer and at the World Championships in 2019.
Dunfee fought to keep this event on the calendar, but it was eventually dropped from the Worlds and Olympics schedule.
“I will always be in mourning for the withdrawal of the 50 km. I think it was the best event in track and field, a real challenge of endurance, said Dunfee. But you know, I imagine sprint events are also fun! »
Canada’s beach volleyball teams were playing for gold later Sunday on the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Games.
