Nearly 1,500 people were evacuated around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. A situation that makes the International Atomic Energy Agency fear the worst.
The Zaporijjia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is again at the heart of concern. The Russian occupation forces have announced the partial evacuation of several surrounding towns due to the intensification of Ukrainian bombardments in the region, according to them. This decision makes the worst fear theInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). “The situation in the area near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous”warned Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the IAEA, on Saturday 6 May.
“Preventing the threat of a serious nuclear accident”
“We must act to prevent the threat of a serious nuclear accident and its consequences for the population and the environment”, added Rafael Mariano Grossi. Nearly 1,500 people have already been evacuated, in particular to Energodar, where the majority of the employees of the nuclear power plant live. But according to the director of the site, appointed by the Russians, the employees are not concerned by these evacuations. The latter would above all be a tactical maneuver by the Russians.
