For some, the country where the shoes are made first refers to working conditions. And then there are reassuring origins. “Handmade in Portugal, that’s it, so the quality combined with the know-how, I’m sure I’ll keep them for a long time. That’s why I buy them”confides a client. How Portugal became a shoe size, attracting more and more customers? A French brand has bet everything on Portuguese know-how, to the point of opening its own factory in the country.
A recognized workforce
“Real production started three months ago. We manage to produce around 150 pairs a day”explains Jean-Michel Awad, Deputy Managing Director at Bobbies. He now lives in northern Portugal. According to him, the asset is the proximity which makes it possible to follow the trend. But Portugal’s number one advantage is its recognized workforce. “I’ve been working since I was 14, I’ve been in shoes for 44 years already”says worker Alzira Maria Santos. She earns just over 800 euros per month.
