There has been great concern on the international scene since the Russians took control of Europe’s largest power plant in Zaporizhia, Ukraine. A team from France Télévisions was able to go there, supervised by the Russian army.

It is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe: the Zaporijia power plant, in southern Ukraine. The strategic site is now in Russian hands. A team from France Télévisions is one of the first Western journalists to have been able to enter. No Ukrainian employee of the plant was visible, it was the Russian army who opened the doors to them. On the night of March 3 to 4, the Russians wanted to take control. An administrative and training building caught fire when it was only 500 m from the reactors. Nuclear disaster was narrowly averted.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) did not detect abnormally high radiation, but was unable to access the site. Two of the six reactors are working. The plant represents a fifth of Ukraine’s electricity production capacity.
