The European Euclid mission, which must explore two great enigmas of the Universe, dark energy and dark matter, took off on Saturday from Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, according to a live video broadcast from the American company.

The two-tonne telescope, which is to be positioned 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, aims to better understand dark matter, which holds galaxies together, and dark energy, responsible for the expansion of the Universe. Together they constitute 95% of the Universe, but remain one of the greatest mysteries of cosmology.
