The warning comes as Russian state media published unverifiable stories about violence in eastern Ukraine, a region held in part by pro-Russian separatist rebels. Russian media accuse Kiev of planning an assault on the rebel enclave in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

“The EU sees no basis in the allegations coming from the non-government controlled areas of Donetsk and Lugansk about a possible Ukrainian attack”added Josep Borrell.

The head of European diplomacy defended the “key role” played by observers deployed by theOrganization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Ukraine, to check what is happening on the ground. It also “welcomed Ukraine’s attitude of moderation in the face of continuous provocations and destabilization efforts”.
