On the sidelines of the NATO summit, Emmanuel Macron symbolically handed over the presidency of the European Union to the Czech Prime Minister on Thursday, June 30. What is the assessment of these six months of mandate?

The last European summit under French presidency took place on 25 June. “Dear Emmanuel, I think France can be very proud of this presidency, it was exceptional. Many thanks for this“, congratulated Ursula von der Leyenthe President of the European Commission. This presidency isso successful?

French diplomats negotiated the battery of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, the reception of refugees, financial and military aid or even the granting of candidate status to the European Union. But Emmanuel Macron’s desire to continue the dialogue with Vladimir Putin and not to humiliate Russia has gone down very badly in Eastern Europe.

The main success of the French presidency is to have succeeded in advancing European issues on the agreement on digital regulation, the carbon tax at the borders, the end of the thermal engine or even the minimum wage. The negative points are on the asylum/immigration pact, border control and the distribution of migrants.
