The President of the European Commission believes that Canada should focus on exporting “clean hydrogen” to Europe, as the continent tries to shift away from Russian sources of fossil fuels.
In an email interview with The Canadian PressUrsula von der Leyen said that in the meantime, Canada could also increase its exports of liquefied natural gas.
Ms. Von der Leyen is due to arrive in Canada on Monday evening. His visit on Tuesday to Ottawa and then to Kingston, Ont., will focus on clean energy, trade and support for Ukraine.
In an interview, Ms. Von der Leyen said that the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Canada was, in a turbulent world, a way to strengthen ties with allies.
She also defended new EU rules that will require forest imports to include geotagging. However, Canada argues that this rule will complicate timber exports, while the EU believes that it will promote sustainable practices in this sector.
Von der Leyen was due to visit Canada last fall, but her visit was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
