Richerenches market: European capital of truffles

The Richerenches market (Drôme-Provençale) is known to be the capital of truffles. Great chefs, traders and individuals jostle in the old market, where prices can rise very quickly.

The Richerenches market is one of the most famous markets in Europe for its sale of truffles. “We talk about it, we talk about it, but we never come. Well this time, I came”, declares a customer who came from Marseille with his wife to do Christmas shopping. The market maintains a certain reputation, and sometimes sees up to 700 kilos of truffles sold per weekend in peak season.

The market supplies the most prestigious tables in France

The town of Richerenches actually has two truffle markets: one for individuals, and another for professionals. In the second, the atmosphere is much less light and traders prefer to buy out of sight. “If people don’t want to be seen, it’s not because there’s deception or anything, it’s discretion”testifies Catherine Mûre, a truffle trader, who supplies the tables of the greatest French restaurateurs.
