European art before 1800 | The National Gallery appoints a new curator

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) announced Thursday the appointment of Chloé M. Pelletier as Curator of European Art (before 1800).

The specialist in European art will be responsible for an important collection of paintings, works on paper and sculptures dating from the Middle Ages to the 18e century, which includes key works of French and Italian art, a remarkable collection of religious objects and a prestigious collection of paintings from the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age.

Chloé M. Pelletier’s mandate will include enriching this collection, which includes nearly 1,100 works. She will oversee the acquisition program and will also design exhibitions dedicated to European art.

“I can’t wait to anchor myself in this avant-garde museum and in this city which has already won me over with its dynamism and its warm side”, underlined Chloé M. Pelletier, who is originally from Texas and worked in within universities and major museum institutions in the United States, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Before joining the MMFA, she held the position of Associate Curator in the Department of European Paintings and Sculptures at the Art Institute of Chicago. She holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago, where she focused on environmental studies and early modern Atlantic art.
