Europe intends to invest 42 billion euros to finance research but also the establishment of new semiconductor factories.
It is a highly strategic laboratory in Louvain (Belgium). New generation semiconductors are produced there. Passing through, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner in charge of the internal market, called on Europe to become independent from Asia, the leader in this market. “We are going to quadruple the production of semiconductors in Europe in the next ten years”he announces.
Europe plans to invest 42 billion euros for this project, including 12 billion to finance research and 30 billion to set up new semiconductor factories. The authorities fear a new shortage which could again shut down car chains for months. With this project, Brussels also aims to attract private capital to relaunch the production of semiconductors in Europe.
