Europe toughens its tone on disinformation

Since the Hamas attacks, there has been a large proliferation of hateful content and false information on social networks. The European Commission will open an investigation targeting TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.

A video which allegedly shows Israeli children taken prisoner by Hamas, seen by hundreds of thousands of Internet users. Although this false information has since been removed, others continue to circulate. Contents hateful, calls to violence, diverted images… PIn an attempt to stem this torrent which is sweeping through social networks, Brussels has just opened an investigation targeting the Meta and TikTok platforms. “The widespread dissemination of illicit content and disinformation linked to these events carries a clear risk of stigmatization of certain communities”notes Thierry Breton, European Commissioner responsible for the Internal Market.

A fine in the event of a prolonged violation

Last week, the latter launched the same investigation targeting the social network (ex-Twitter). This turn of the screw is part of the new European regulations: everything that is illegal in real life must be illegal on the internet and digital platforms must therefore remove all illicit content. The opening of an investigation is the first step in the procedure. In the event of a prolonged violation, the platforms face a fine of up to 6% of their turnover.
