Global warming particularly affects Europe. This is the result of a study by the World Meteorological Organization. We learn that our continent has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the world since the 1980s.
The alarming finding comes from a study by the European service Copernicus. Europe has warmed twice as fast as the rest of the world and four times as fast as comparable latitudes. In 2022, the European average temperature is higher by 2.3 °C in the pre-industrial period, while this increase is only 1.2 °C for the whole planet. The trend has been accelerating since the 1980s.
A hope, the use of renewable energies
In places and especially in France, the warming is even greater. In terms of explanation, scientific opinions differ. Some attribute this to the jet stream, a cold high-altitude current of air that weakens and splits in two over Europe. Others point to a very high consumption of greenhouse gases. The continent is indeed one of the most industrialized in the world. On the consequences side, on the other hand, it is unanimous. Droughts like the one in 2022 will become the norm.
