On the afternoon of Wednesday April 10, European deputies adopted the migration pact. It plans to tighten controls on migrant arrivals as well as a system of solidarity between States so that those most exposed, Italy in particular, do not shoulder the burden of migrants alone.

After ten hours of negotiation, the migration pact was adopted on Wednesday April 10. In the French ranks, most of the candidates for the next elections refused to vote for it. Too lax for some, like Jordan Bardella, head of the RN list in the European elections, he is too harsh for others. “It is our ability to welcome with dignity that is being called into question”, believes Manon Aubry. The Macronist candidate, Valérie Hayer, claims victory.

An accelerated filtering procedure

An accelerated screening procedure will be put in place at Europe’s borders. Identity checks with fingerprints, facial recognition and identity documents will take place within seven days. The information will be shared with all member countries. A sorting will also be carried out between people who are clearly not refugees and therefore eligible for deportation, and those who will be able to apply for asylum. Everyone will be grouped together in waiting areas. Centers will soon be built.

To relieve countries like Italy or Greece, a solidarity mechanism is planned. The other Member States will either have to welcome or contribute financially to the tune of 20,000 euros per asylum seeker.
