“Perennial pollutants” are suspected of causing serious health problems such as thyroid disease and cancer. In the Gard, rivers surrounding a factory are full of them.

Salindres (Gard), 3,600 inhabitants and a factory which is now causing concern. Solvay, a Belgian company, manufactures chemical substances used in medicines and even pesticides. In the waterways around the factory, the Générations futures association detected pollutants in very large quantities. At this location, two molecules in particular, TFA and triflic acid, were identified. Molecules found in several other watercourses but also in the drinking water of two municipalities.

The association plans to file a complaint

Contacted, Solvay replied that it was “in line with current regulations”. However, these releases raise questions because these molecules belong to the piface family, also called “eternal pollutants” which never disappear from the environment. Molecules recognized in certain cases as carcinogenic. The Générations futures association plans to file a complaint for the offense of aggravated water pollution.
