Eric Clapton’s guitar sold for over $ 600,000 at auction in New York

An Eric Clapton collector’s guitar was bought for $ 625,000 in New York City, the highest price at the Friday 19 and Saturday 20 rock legends auction that totaled nearly $ 5 million, Julien’s Auctions announced.

Announced as the highlight of this sale, which took place at the Hard Rock Café in New York but also on the internet, this acoustic guitar, a Martin D-45, strummed by Clapton in 1970 during a first live concert by his group Derek and The Dominos, was estimated at $ 300,000 and $ 500,000 by Julien’s.

Its selling price remains much lower than the record for a guitar, reached by the semi-acoustic on which the singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, had played during the famous concert. MTV Unplugged in 1993 ($ 6 million in 2020 at Julien’s Auction).

Rock and blues legend Eric Clapton has been controversial since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, posting positions deemed anti-vaccine and opposing confinements.

Other guitars sold included a 1976 Gibson Explorer from The Edge, used by U2, which sold for $ 437,500, and a Fender Stratocaster that Pink Floyd musician David Gilmour had played on, sold for $ 200,000.

Nearly 1,000 lots and various items passed through the hands of the Beatles, Guns N’Roses, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones, were sold during these auctions.
