A painting of Monet sprinkled with mashed potatoes, a fire alarm set off in Parliament… In Germany, environmental activists are stepping up radical actions to raise awareness about climate change. Faced with these events, the German population is divided.

In a museum near Berlin (Germany), two environmental activists attacked a painting by Monet estimated at 110 million euros, covering it with mashed potatoes. “We are in the midst of a climate catastrophe”, said an activist. The paintwork, protected by glass, was not damaged, but the message got through. In London (United Kingdom), ten days ago, a painting by Van Gogh was sprayed with tomato sauce. The movement is spreading across Europe, but in Germany, radical actions by environmental activists are increasing.

Thus, in Germany, the fire alarm was triggered in the Parliament to alert on the climate crisis, and activists blocked traffic. For activists, this type of action is the last way to make things happen in the face of the climate emergency. In the population, if some young people seem to adhere to this discourse, this is not the case for the older ones. On the side of the Greens, we feel embarrassment, because some leaders have been able to participate, in the past, in actions of civil disobedience.
