To protect forests, some band together to buy them. This movement is growing in importance in France and raises a lot of questions about the objectives of these citizens who have become foresters.
Several nature-loving citizens met in a forest in the town of Bergesserin (Saône-et-Loire), which they now own. Their objective is to prevent clear cuts as in the forest of Dun-les-Places (Nièvre), a former place of pilgrimage ransacked by industrial machinery. It is not the only forest which finds itself eradicated in favor of a coniferous monoculture.
Several forestry groups advocate environmentally friendly management. “When you’re used to seeing the huge machines that work in the forests and make the famous clear cuts, it’s great to accompany another way of exploiting wood”, says Jean-Claude Pont, member of the Forest Group “La Forêt hospitalière”. The group of owners choose the trees they want to keep before the lumberjack comes by, and stick a sticker on them.
