(London) Several people were injured on Sunday evening after two trains collided in southern England, corroborating sources said.
According to the local press, a dozen minor injuries were to be deplored during the accident, which occurred shortly before 7 p.m. (local and GMT).
On Twitter, the transport police said that several injuries were reported, “but luckily no one died.”
“We are currently at the scene of a train crash involving two trains between Andover and Salisbury,” local police tweeted, adding that emergency services were dispatched to the scene.
According to a spokesperson for the UK rail network, the last car of a first train derailed after hitting an object while exiting a tunnel near Salisbury station, about 140 kilometers from London, before being struck at the rear by a second train, the derailment having disabled the signaling system.
“Injuries have been reported and the emergency services are on site alongside the intervention teams of the rail network,” added the same source.
“Everything went black,” then “there were red flashes and everything,” passenger Angela Mattingly told the BBC.
“Suddenly we were pushed around quite a bit, objects flew and I think a few people were thrown forward and hit their heads. For a few seconds you don’t understand what’s going on, ”she explained,“ people started to panic, but no one was seriously injured ”.
Transport Minister Grant Shapps has announced the opening of an investigation. “We need to understand how this could have happened to prevent it in the future,” he said.
About fifty firefighters were mobilized on the spot, said the latter on Twitter.
According to the transport police, a center has been opened to accommodate the victims.
