Energy sobriety, you say? | The duty

The days of February 3 and 4 were characterized by polar cold, and records were broken in several places in the province. The authorities anticipated a significant consumption of electricity and asked citizens to reduce the use of electrical appliances, especially during peak periods. On Friday, around 5:30 p.m., the peak of electricity consumption was reached.

At this very moment, I received a friend at my house for an aperitif. I decided we’d take it by candlelight. It was partly a joke, partly the source of a different vibe, partly a way to participate in the energy sobriety effort.

What was our surprise when we saw the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge light up through the French window of my apartment! It was pretty, of course, but was it compatible with the exhortations of Hydro-Quebec, which asks us to wash the dishes at midnight, reduce the heating and shorten the duration of the shower? Shouldn’t the company that manages the bridge, which comes under the federal government, set an example of saving money in times of apprehended lack of energy?

[…] We are far from energy sobriety!
