It is an alternative to fossil fuels. In Venice, the vaporettos sail with frying oil collected in restaurants. It is cheaper, greener and totally odorless.
To visit Venice (Italy) by vaporetto, a means of public transport which has become the emblem of the city of the Doges. The fuel for these vaporettos is now based on cooking oil. According to tourists, it does not smell of frying on board. “I already came a few years ago with the diesels that we could smell whereas there, we hardly smell anything at all in the air we breathe”said a tourist.
These frying oils, which have become fuel, come from restaurants in Venice. One of these restaurants produces 100 liters of used oil per month in the kitchen, which it stores in containers. “You can see a lot more fish in the canals now“, notes Sergio Fragiacomo of the Bistro in Venice. Used oils are then transformed into biodiesel. This makes it possible to reduce 15% at 40% polluting emissions.
