Heads of State and Government meet in Brussels on Thursday 20 October to agree on a common strategy to lower gas prices. However, no one agrees on the method, as journalist Julien explains Gasparuttolive from Brussels.

On Thursday 20 October, the Heads of State and Government of the European Union meet in Brussels (Belgium) to discuss a common strategy to lower gas prices. “A sign that the hour is serious: for the first time since the beginning of the war, the 27 will not start this summit by addressing the Ukrainian subject, but by talking of energy”says journalist Julien Gasparuttolive from Brussels.

“According to many diplomats here, the discussions will be long and complex. The issue is simple: how to lower gas prices. But on the method, no one agrees. There are several options on the table , for example, imposing a maximum price on our foreign suppliers, playing on the index used to set the prices for transactions between operators, or even imposing a cap on the price of gas used to produce electricity. But in this case, everyone camped a little on their positions”adds the journalist.

Between Germany and France, the differences are such that the two countries have just announced that they are postponing their joint Council of Ministers, which was to be held next week.
