To fight and better diagnose a frequent but still too little-known disease, a week dedicated to endometriosis has been set up. It starts Monday, March 6. The journalist-doctor Damien Mascret evokes on the set of 12/13 the disease, which affects between 1.5 and 2 million women in France.
Endometriosis would affect in France, “between 1.5 and 2 million women of childbearing age”, says Damien Mascret. And yet, it takes many years to detect it. “It takes an average of seven years to make the diagnosis! It is due to the symptoms which are very non-specific because endometriosis is due to cells of the uterus which, instead of being normally eliminated during menstruation, will be deposited inside the lower abdomen on other organs, the ovaries, the bladder, the rectum or the wall of the vagina”says the doctor.
The symptoms are multiple, with the first menstrual pains, “to the point of having the impression of being stabbed in the lower abdomen“.”When the disease progresses, it hurts even outside the rules. During intercourse, it is not normal for penetration to be painful, especially deep pain. It could be endometriosis“, adds the doctor. Endometriosis can also cause difficulty in urinating, digestive disorders, or pain during defecation”.
The main risk is infertility. “The other risk is to put the pain on the back of menstruation for a long time and not to treat the disease correctly”he concludes, inviting to consult in case of doubt.
