February 23 | Last winter, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec (MNBAQ) revisited the work of Quebec painter Paul-Émile Borduas, author of “Global Refusal”, after collector Michael J. Audain and his wife, Yoshiko Karasawa, donated eight paintings by the artist to the Museum. “Ideally, I had to show Mr. Audain with a few visible canvases,” says Francis Vachon. When I did my photojournalism course, my teacher, Frank, told us this wise phrase: “When you are given a lemon, make lemonade.” Faced with an awkward contrast between the light on Mr. Audain and that on the well-lit paintings, the photographer made his “lemonade”, that is to say he captured the silhouette of the collector. The latter stood in front of “Figures schematiques”, an oil on canvas (1956) by Paul-Émile Borduas (129.9 cm x 195.3 cm). Francis Vachon Le Devoir
