A major fire broke out in an apartment building in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie, late Saturday afternoon.

The flames originated in a building located on Lesieur Street, near a Canadian Tire store.


Firefighters from the municipality’s fire safety service have been at work since 5 p.m. to try to control the blaze, which continued to wreak havoc an hour later, according to TVA Nouvelles.

Firefighters from the barracks of neighboring municipalities were also called in for reinforcement.

The origin of the fire is not known at this time.
