Many dwellings, formerly rented to seasonal workers, have disappeared from the market. On the coast, rentals are often unaffordable, and controls are tightening. Today, both employers and municipalities are looking for solutions.
A restaurant in Saint-Martin-de-Ré (Charente Maritime) recruited eight seasonal workers for the summer. The owner of the establishment, Christelle Cartier, was responsible for finding them accommodation. “We are housed 100 meters from the restaurant. We are doing very well with the bosses we have”says Jimmy Shopsthe chef. As of last winter, Christelle Cartier invested 450,000 euros in a house to house seasonal workers.
Help from town halls
A solution that makes it possible to cope with the lack of housing, and the prices that are too high for seasonal workers in the region. “We are obliged to do so. If we don’t have housing, we can’t recruit“, she assures. To Sables d’Olonne (Vendee), Egoes Marcotte pays 450 euros for his accommodation. The town hall put her in touch with the owner. Jacqueline Meneswho rents his accommodation, received 800 euros from the municipality. Finally, in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine)the high school boarding school maritime welcomes seasonal workers in the town.
