What our critic thought
New adaptation of the novel of the same name by James Clavell, Shogun is a grandiose series that takes place on the eve of a civil war in Japan, at the beginning of the 17th century.e century. The result is convincing, to the point of having the impression of watching the most exciting history lesson.

- Best Guest Actress in a Comedy (Da’Vine Joy Randolph)
What our critic thought
We never really understood the craze for Only Murders in the Building. Is it a comedy? No. At least, we didn’t smile often while watching the first seasons. Is it a drama? No, not either. Is it a thriller policeman? Even less so. The third season, which has just been released, contains an additional ingredient that could convince us to re-embark: Meryl Streep. Paul Rudd also makes an appearance.

What our columnist thought about it
In just six episodes, director Issa López manages to create an immersive experience in a fictional community in Alaska, with stunningly beautiful images, while we are in the time of year when it is dark, 24 hours a day. In any case, it will certainly be one of my favorite series of the year.

- Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville)

What our columnist thought about it
We finish The Crown saying that without being complacent, Peter Morgan’s view of the Queen and the monarchy is rather sympathetic. He salutes Elizabeth’s commitment, insists on her devotion and her uprightness, without hiding his rigidity and his lack of empathy, particularly towards Charles’ companions. Above all, with these last six episodes, he admirably closes the loop of a series that will have marked its time.

Fallout
His selections
The series has been nominated 16 times, including in the following categories:
- Best Drama Series
- Best Actor in a Drama Series (Walton Goggins)
What our columnist thought about it
It’s really very good, Fallouta kind of cross between Silo from Apple TV+, Westworld (from the same creators) and The Last of Us. And there’s no need to know anything about the video game universe to get fully immersed in this retrofuturistic western, which includes eight episodes of over an hour, available in English and French, in a dubbed version in Quebec, bravo.

Hacksseason 3

The series has been nominated 16 times, including in the following categories:
- Best Comedy
- Best Actress in a Comedy (Jean Smart)
- Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy (Hannah Einbinder)
- Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy (Paul W. Downs)
- Best Guest Actress in a Comedy (Kaitlin Olson)
- Best Guest Actor in a Comedy (Christopher Lloyd)
What our columnist thought about it
The great series Hacks pits comedy legend Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) against woke and talented screenwriter Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). The two estranged heroines cross paths – and reconcile, as you might expect – backstage at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. Yes, yes. The first hour of Hacks 3 takes place almost entirely in our metropolis, with plenty of aerial views of Place des Arts, crowded Sainte-Catherine Street and Mount Royal Park.

Despite its flaws, I devoured in one go the ten episodes of the third chapter of The Morning Show. This is the best season of the three, with a touch of Succession not unpleasant at all.

Baby Reindeer
His selections
The series has been nominated 11 times, including in the following categories:
- Best Miniseries
- Best Actor in a Limited Series (Richard Gadd)
- Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series (Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau)
What our columnist thought about it
The seven episodes of around forty minutes of Baby Reindeerwhich tell a very real case of unhealthy obsession, are terrifying and hypnotic. And don’t be fooled by its childish title, which does not do justice to this super original, twisted, sometimes comical, often dark and unexpectedly deep television work.

The list of actresses in the credits sparkles: Calista Flockhart, Diane Lane, Demi Moore, Naomi Watts, Chloë Sevigny, Jessica Lange and Molly Ringwald. And under the hat of the eccentric author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and ofIn Cold Bloodactor Tom Hollander is fabulous. A delicious miniseries.

Shot as a mockumentary, this touching, intelligent and cracking series transports us to an elementary school in the heart of a disadvantaged neighborhood in Philadelphia. Think about Modern Family And Parks and Recreation who would have had a baby. The pace of the episodes is fast and the writing, brilliant. This is an effective sitcom that tackles current issues with bite and kindness.
