Drama series

The suspense continued until 11 p.m., but in the end, Succession was crowned Best Drama Series. While many believed that Squid Game (in French, The squid game) was to make history by becoming the first foreign language (non-English) production to win the prestigious trophy, HBO’s gritty family saga finally won. This prize was added to the two others won earlier in the evening: best supporting actor (Matthew Macfayden) and best texts. Since we are used to seeing their characters plotting and tearing each other apart on screen, we couldn’t help but smile when we saw the actors of Succession entwine each other warmly each time one of them triumphed.

For its part, Squid Game did not leave empty-handed. Netflix’s popular South Korean series, in which indebted misfits kill each other in a bizarre competition of perverted children’s games, in hopes of winning millions of dollars, garnered two Emmys: Outstanding Directing and Best Actor (Lee Jung-jæ).

For a second time, Zendaya was crowned best actress for her portrayal of a drug-addicted teenager in Euphoriaand Julia Garner (ozark) has distinguished herself on the side of the supporting actresses.

comedies

In comedies, Ted Lasso repeated its feat of last year by winning the majority of the prizes. The Apple TV+ series, which paints the portrait of an American football coach who becomes a soccer coach in the United Kingdom, has won four golden statuettes: best comedy, best direction, best actor (Jason Sudekis) and best actor of support (Brett Goldstein).

The fight was tight. Ted Lasso ahead of the finish line Abbott Elementary, a documenter set in a predominantly black school in Philadelphia. In addition to winning the prize for best texts, the series allowed Sheryl Lee Ralph to be voted best supporting actress. In Canada, the first season ofAbbott Elementary is available on Disney+. The second season will premiere on Global.

For a second consecutive year, Jean Smart was named Best Comedic Actress for hacks.

Miniseries

As expected, The White Lotus (in French, The white lotus) dominated the tier reserved for miniseries, TV movies and anthology series. Mike White’s offering, which chronicles the highly unpredictable stay of a group of wealthy vacationers at a Hawaiian resort, won five Emmys: best miniseries, best direction, best lyrics, best supporting actress (Jennifer Coolidge) and best supporting actor (Murray Bartlett).

The White Lotus (which can be watched in Quebec on Crave) continued a winning streak that began last week at the Creative Arts Emmy, an event during which Quebec composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer picked up two awards for his theme music and l soundscape of the HBO drama. A second season is expected in October.

Elsewhere, Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) and Michael Keaton (dopesick) were crowned best actress and best actor.

A post-pandemic gala

The 74are Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted by show veteran Kenan Thompson Saturday Night Live. The actor and comedian opened the evening with a full-throttle dance number to some of the most popular theme songs in screen history, including Friends, The Brady Bunch, Law and Order, Stranger Things and Game Of Thrones.

Kenan Thompson led the ceremony in a crowded Microsoft Theater where a festive atmosphere reigned. The difference was striking compared to the 2020 and 2021 editions, held in an intimate format due to a certain COVID-19 pandemic.

It was to be expected, Jean-Marc Vallée carved out a place for himself in the in memoriam segment, which aimed to salute the memory of the artisans of the small screen who passed away during the last year. The photo of the director of the series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, who died on December 25, 2021 of a heart attack, appeared on the giant screen while John Legend played the piano. Betty White, Bob Saget and Ray Liotta were also among the big names honored during the extract.

Scrolling thanks

To shorten the speeches and ensure that the event maintains a good cruising speed, the organizers had asked the finalists to transmit – in writing – thanks which could be presented at the bottom of the screen in the event of their victory. Officially, the Academy wanted to allow winners to “let their hearts speak without feeling the pressure of holding back a list of names.” Unofficially, we guess that she wanted to spare us endless and monotonous lists like: “I would like to thank my agent, my lawyer, my primary school teacher, etc. »

Overall, this strategy worked. Ironically, the best thanks came from a star who obviously didn’t get the memo: Jennifer Coolidge. Losing precious seconds to say that she felt cramped in her outfit because she had taken a lavender bath in the afternoon which had made her “swell”, the lucky one was forced to expressing his thanks (scribbled on a crumpled piece of paper) in a hurry, while in control, the volume of the orchestra was slowly but surely increased. In desperation, the actress even ended up dancing behind the microphone stand!
