“The announcement of the trip by Emmanuel Macron in kyiv is a strong signal”estimates Wednesday January 17 on franceinfo General Jérôme Pellistrandi, editor-in-chief of the review National Defense, the day after the French head of state’s press conference. Emmanuel Macron has in fact announced that he will go to Ukraine in February, a date far from trivial since it will mark “two years” of the invasion of Russia.

General Jérôme Pellistrandi thus believes that by announcing this trip, Emmanuel Macron is sending both a signal “in support of Ukrainians” And “a message to Russia”. He also considers that the President of the Republic also wants “to reassure public opinion which could be tired of this war which, unfortunately, will enter its third year”.

“France on the front line”

During his press conference on Tuesday evening, Emmanuel Macron also announced that France would deliver 40 new long-range SCALP missiles to Ukraine. General Jérôme Pellistrandi judges this announcement “extremely important”especially since these projectiles have “strong added value” and have already enabled “spectacular results”.

According to this specialist, this future delivery therefore comes “consolidate the long-term support of France” to the Ukrainians. He also recalls that this support had already been “symbolized by the movement [le 13 janvier] of the new French Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Stayed in kyiv”. General Jérôme Pellistrandi therefore notes that the French government is putting in place “a very strong sequence to demonstrate to Ukrainians and Europeans that France is on the front line to support Ukraine.”
