Emmanuel Macron received the leaders of all political parties at the Élysée on Thursday March 7 to discuss the war in Ukraine. However, the strategy advocated by the President of the Republic has not convinced.
After two and a half hours of meeting at the Élysée on Ukraine, Thursday March 7, on the left of the political spectrum, the strategic ambiguity advocated by Emmanuel Macron is far from having convinced the party leaders. “The President of the Republic clearly tells the French, the political forces, that France’s position has changed. There is no longer a red line, there are no more limits”, declared Fabien Roussel, general secretary of the Communist Party. On the right, the judgment is also severe among Les Républicains. “I reiterated our total opposition to the commitment of ground troops”affirmed the president of the party, Éric Ciotti.
A vote on support for Ukraine on March 12 in the Assembly
As the European elections approach in June, Jordan Bardella, leading in the polls, places the event in the context of the campaign. “I told him that the electoral campaign in which we are engaged today does not allow everything”said the president of the National Rally. “Irresponsible”, “warlike”, “virilistic”, “dangerous” : these are the epithets which appear in the political debate, and announce tumultuous parliamentary exchanges during the vote on March 12 in the National Assembly on support for Ukraine.
