Emmanuel Macron welcomes “a Caribbean, European, African, universal consciousness”

A ceremony in the largest library in France. During the tribute to the writer Maryse Condé, who died on April 2 at the age of 90, organized Monday April 15 at 4 p.m. at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (13th arrondissement of Paris), Emmanuel Macron greeted “irony” of the author, who made her “a Caribbean, European, African, universal consciousness”. The Guadeloupean novelist, figure of the Francophonie, has published around thirty novels, notably on slavery and Africa, as well as plays and essays. Follow our live stream.

A tribute demanded by the world of culture. In the days following the disappearance of Maryse Condé, around thirty personalities, including the former Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira, the writer Leïla Slimani and the actor Omar Sy had asked in a forum in the New Obs that a national tribute be paid to the novelist and playwright. “Maryse Condé confronted the world – the Caribbean, Africa, the United States and Europe, in a terribly contemporary way, and ahead of her time”wrote the signatories of the appeal.

“Guadeloupean independentist” until his death. Committed against colonialism, Maryse Condé was also the first president of the Committee for the Memory of Slavery. The fate of his archipelago, Guadeloupe, has always mattered deeply to him. Friday April 12, during his funeral, a Guadeloupean independence flag was placed on his coffin. As the 1st recalls, Maryse Condé declared: I will die Guadeloupean. An independent Guadeloupean.”

Emmanuel Macron had decorated the writer. The President of the Republic awarded her the Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit in March 2020. She then became “the first black woman to achieve this dignity”, write the signatories of the tribune of New Obs.
