“Let’s watch out for all the confusion.” This was the main message of Emmanuel Macron’s speech to the Grand Orient de France, Wednesday November 8, about anti-Semitism which “resurfaced” in France, since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

The head of state warned those who “claim to support our compatriots of the Jewish faith by confusing the rejection of Muslims and the support of Jews”, in a clear allusion to the extreme right. He then singled out those who “prefer to remain ambiguous on the question of anti-Semitism for the sake of flattering new communitarianisms”aiming, on the left, at La France insoumise.

“The Republic does not compromise and will not compromise. And we will be merciless in the face of the bearers of hatred”, he added. Alongside these warnings, the president said nothing about his potential participation in the march against anti-Semitism, which will be held on Sunday, following the call from the presidents of the National Assembly and the Senate. The Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, confirmed that she would go there.
