Emmanuel Macron “warmly” congratulated for his victory by several of his African counterparts

Senegalese President Macky Sall, who also holds the presidency of the African Union, was one of the first African heads of state to send a message of congratulations to Emmanuel Macron, who against Marine Le Pen, was re-elected with more than 58% of the votes cast on April 24, 2022.

Macky Sall “warmly” congratulated his French counterpart via his Twitter account, like several African leaders. Among them, Moussa Faki Mahamat, President of the African Union Commission. The latter said to himself happy to continuewith Emmanuel Macron their common commitment “to build between Africa and France, and more broadly Europe, renewed and mutually beneficial relations”.

The Rwandan Paul Kagame, for his part, congratulated the candidate Macron for a re-election “deserved” which attests to a “visionary leadership” seeking “to unite and not to divide”. “Rwanda looks forward to even more and stronger partnerships between our peoples and our nations,” added President Kagame.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara also welcomed “to continue with (Emmanuel Macron) the strengthening of the ties of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France”.

“More than a common past, we have a future to build”Gabonese leader Ali Bongo Ondimba insisted in his congratulatory tweet.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi is also calling for a strengthening of relations with Paris. “This new mandate will certainly allow us to further strengthen cooperation between the DRC and the France”he said.

In Niger, like many of his African peers, President Mohamed Bazoum hailed the “brilliant re-election of Emmanuel Macron” while emphasizing that “sour experience of international issues in general and the Sahel in particular makes it a valuable partner for us in our fight against terrorism”.

It is the ally in the fight against terrorism that the Chadian leader Mahamat Idriss Deby, president of the Transitional Military Council (CMT), also congratulated. “President Macron is a committed partner in our common fight against terrorism in the Sahel and an enlightened president of a great friendly country with which Chad maintains historic relations of cooperation”he said on April 25, 2022, reports Chadian media Al Wihda.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also argued “the close historical relations” that Paris and Cairo maintain while rejoicing to continue “consultation and mutual coordination on a number of regional and international files of common interest”.

The African assessment of Emmanuel Macron’s first term will have been marked in particular by the withdrawal demanded by Bamako of French soldiers engaged in the fight against terrorism in Mali. In his program, candidate Macron noted that “France shares with its European partners a great ambition for its relations with Africa”. Furthermore, he underlined that the Africa-Europe summit of February 2022, which was held under the French presidency, “laid out a long-term roadmap for a shared future”. The still sensitive question of Franco-African relations seems destined to be dealt with in the years to come in a more European context.
