Emmanuel Macron proposed to set up a public audiovisual budget defined over several years, in order to guarantee its independence despite the abolition of the audiovisual license fee, Friday April 22 on France Inter.

The candidate for the presidential election reiterated his desire to abolish the audiovisual license fee. “But I want public broadcasting and its independence”he continued, placing himself in opposition to the candidate of the National Rally Marine Le Pen, who proposes to privatize the public audiovisual sector.

According to the outgoing president, the fee which finances France Télévisions, Radio France, INA, TV5 Monde and France Médias Monde did not guarantee the independence of these media, since their budgets are supplemented by the State to the tune of “several hundred million euros per year” for ten years. This help “would allow” already to interfere in the management of public media, according to Emmanuel Macron. He therefore proposed to define “a budget with multi-year visibility” who “does not give rise to budgetary regulation in the year by the government”.
