During his state visit to Brazil, Emmanuel Macron called for building a new Mercosur. The President of the Republic wants to renegotiate this trade agreement which he considers “very bad”.
On a state visit to Brazil, where he met President Lula, Emmanuel Macron judged Mercosur to be a “very bad agreement”because it does not take into account “the subject of biodiversity and climate”. This trade agreement was concluded between the European Union and the Mercosur countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia) in 2019.
“A new generation agreement”
“Let’s put an end to Mercosur 20 years ago. Let’s build a new agreement that is in light of our objectives, of our reality. That is to say, a trade agreement that is responsible for a point of view of development, climate and biodiversity”, declared the French president. The head of state called for building a “new agreement”. He mentioned “a new generation agreement, with mirror clauses, which will facilitate access to the European market for your companies”.
