New aid for Ukraine? Emmanuel Macron called on Wednesday December 13 for the European Union to be “at the rendezvous of full and lasting support for Ukraine”. While welcoming Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob to Paris, the French president told the press that their two countries were “determined to support Ukraine for as long as necessary in military, economic, humanitarian and diplomatic matters, because our collective security and respect for the international order based on law and our common values are at stake.”

Hungary threatens to block key decisions for Kiev which are on the agenda for a European summit on Thursday and Friday: the opening of EU accession negotiations and the approval of 50 billion euros in European aid , in the form of donations and loans, in favor of this country. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reaffirmed on Wednesday that the opening of these accession negotiations would be “a terrible mistake”ensuring that the expected release of European funds for Budapest would not change his mind.

“The discussions we will have tomorrow are decisive”, said Emmanuel Macron in the courtyard of the Elysée, recalling his position in favor of accession negotiations, accompanied by reforms to the functioning of the EU to allow this new enlargement. For Robert Golob, “the European summit will be difficult but very important”. “If we want this enlargement to be effective, we actually need internal reforms”he agreed.
