Will Emmanuel Macron opt for a bill or rather question the French, with a referendum to decide on the question of the end of life? Those around him are hard-pressed to answer this question. The President of the Republic showed himself to be unfathomable, again Tuesday evening, during a dinner with executives from his majority at the Elysée. Perhaps he will dare to lift the veil on his intentions on Wednesday November 8, during a trip and a speech on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Grand Orient of France, the first Masonic obedience. But Emmanuel Macron does indeed seem to be walking on eggshells.

“The president wants to avoid tensions”

To underline that Emmanuel Macron has not decided anything, the Élysée cites great authors, such as the philosopher Nietzsche: “Convictions are a prison.” Because the president is torn. Deliberately silent during the Pope’s visit to Marseille at the end of September, he redistributed the cards on Sunday, putting back on the table, in his letter to the leaders of political parties, his idea of broadening the scope of the referendum to questions such as the end of life.

This is enough to worry supporters of the law, which is supposed to be presented in December. “The president wants to avoid tensions”, defends the Élysée, where no one has forgotten the outcry aroused among the Freemasons by the famous speech to the Bernardins in 2018. Emmanuel Macron had flaunted his desire to “fix” the link between Church and State. “Misunderstanding cleared up”, swears a relative. In any case, the idea of a text on the end of life arouses the enthusiasm of the Grand Orient de France, which welcomes a “humanist advance”.
